Fruit of Labor

          May Day, Labor Day, or “Araw ng Manggagawa” in the Philippines is a workers’ rest day and a public holiday celebrating the workers’ unions and remembering the hard-fought workers’ rights every 1st day of May.

          In 1884 in the United States of America, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions demanded an eight-hour workday in the United States and in 1886, they succeeded, and it  was eventually approved officially. Subsequently, Labor Day came to be celebrated on the first of May in commemoration of this event. It was first celebrated in 1903 and was led by Dominador Gomez here in the Philippines when we were still under U.S. rule. Later on April 8, 1908, the Philippine Assembly passed a bill esablishing the inaugural day of May Labor Day, a national holiday.
         As it is a public holiday, many people have the day off work and choose to spend it with family and friends. They are having a great holidays, spending the fruit of their labor.
